Two Reasons to Consider Sealing Your Driveway With Bitumen Spray Sealant

Posted on

Here are some reasons why you should consider having your driveway sealed with some bitumen spray sealant by a contractor.

It will make the driveway less susceptible to potholes

One reason why bitumen spray sealing is so popular amongst homeowners with driveways is that it can make a driveway less susceptible to potholes.  After the bitumen is sprayed onto the driveway and then aggregate materials are added to it, it will form a hard, impenetrable layer on the top of the driveway. After it's completely dry, it becomes waterproof and extremely tough, making the driveway less likely to crumble and reducing the likelihood of potholes developing.

This could be worth noting if you need a very hardwearing driveway, due to, for example, parking a heavy vehicle (such as a large motorhome) on it regularly, as this vehicle's weight could cause cracks in an unsealed driveway that could eventually form potholes. This layer's durability could also come in handy if, like many homeowners, your driveway is not only used to park cars but is also used by your family members as a place to play basketball or football, as repeatedly bouncing a ball off an unsealed driveway will almost certainly damage it. However, with a bitumen spray seal treatment on the driveway, you should be able to play these ball games on this surface without it leading to any serious damage.

It could improve the driveway's appearance

Another reason to consider having a contractor apply a bitumen spray seal to your driveway is that it could improve its appearance. If your driveway doesn't require any major repairs but just looks a bit worn (for example, if there are lots of hairline cracks, and if the texture of some sections of it is smoother than other sections, due to being subjected to more friction), then having a bitumen seal sprayed over it could cover up many of its imperfections and give it a more uniform, attractive look. As mentioned above, this new layer would also be hardwearing; as such, it would take far longer for the driveway to develop further imperfections that might affect its appearance, even if it's used very regularly.

Utilising this driveway treatment to make this structure look better could be a good idea if you'd like to sell your home and need to find ways to add to the property's kerb appeal as the driveway is often one of the most prominent elements of a property's exterior and so its condition will have a big impact on the property exterior general kerb appeal.
